Free-standing, thrown lit porcelain light sculpture
The inspiration for Cylinders originated many years ago. Margaret was staying in Osaka, in a dramatic skyscraper hotel from where she could look down onto the crowded city below. It was her first experience of a skyscraper. When back home in her studio she thought 'what will happen if I throw a lot of cylinders, all different heights, just as I had seen from the skyscraper?'. Margaret joined the cylinders together and found an ingenious way to disguise a light inside the structures.

WAVES
Thrown, re-formed and joined translucent porcelain lit wall sculpture
The wall sculpture is wheel-thrown and fine porcelain bands are reformed and joined onto one flat circular band to form a single stable form which is fired to 1,300 degrees C. A metal backing plate with electrical fittings supports Waves.

WHIRLING DERVISH
Fine thrown porcelain light on a black thrown ceramic base
The fine thrown porcelain is cut with a waving wire from the potter's wheel, twisted, turned and joined, so giving the sense of a whirling dervish.
The black ceramic base holds the GU9 lamp holder and lamp

Maker bio: Sirkka Paikkari is an art weaver, cultural producer and inventor of the Loomster Weaving Device. She specialises in making large scale woven art pieces in steel, linen, porcelain and paper, incorporating optic fibres. For over 30 years Sirkka has created these art works from her studio in Finland, and with many of these produced in collaboration with other artists.

WOVEN LIGHT AND PORCELAIN
A double sided installation in woven steel, fibre optics and thrown porcelain

This was the first piece created with the Finnish art weaver, Sirkka Paikkari. The collaboration began in 2008 with Margaret's visit to Sirkka's studio in Helsinki where she was weaving a paper installation on her purpose built loomster weaving device.
